The Lee Boys are one of the best known sacred steel gospel ensembles in the world. This musical style was founded at the House of God Pentecostal Church in Perrine, Florida; the band members are all descendants of Lorenzo Harrison and Rev. Robert E. Lee, both important figures in the development of this indigenous and unique Florida music form, which features the pedal steel guitar. Sacred steel is music described as an inspired unique form of Gospel with a hard-driving, blues-based beat; the genre includes strong elements of gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country, and ideas from other nations. The Lee Boys bring a joyful spiritual sound to their audiences who recognize that this is not “sitting and listening” music; dancing, shouting out, and having fun are all part of the Lee Boys experience. The show’s music is mostly original with a few hymns and standards that the group “blueses up a little.”

Born and raised in Japan, Ayako Yonetani offers classical music through violin performance. Ayako has appeared extensively both in the U.S. and internationally and strongly believes in the value of live performance.

Her repertoire includes Baroque to contemporary western music and contemporary Japanese music. Lecture and residency offerings give her the opportunity to discuss traditional Japanese music and current music education, conduct master classes with violin students, coach chamber music groups, and perform orchestra sectional work. Now a music professor at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Ayako holds academic degrees, including a doctorate, from the Julliard School where she studied with Hyo Kang and the late Dorothy DeLay.

Artist and Activities

One of the finest resident theatres in the state, Florida Studio Theatre has an amazing outreach program that’s all about playwriting, Write A Play. It is an arts-in-education initiative that provides thousands of children with the skills and motivation to write plays. Using high-energy, interactive performances, the program promotes literacy, language, and communication skills. These shows use both scripted performance and improvisational techniques to teach students the basics of setting, character, conflict, and dialogue. Using these elements as a starting point, the FST team of four actors/teaching artists lead students in the creation of an original play. Since 1991, this program has reached over 1,000,000 school children! At the end of every Playmaker’s Tour, students are encouraged to complete and submit their plays to the theatre’s annual Young Playwrights Festival.
