“The Department of State is delighted to partner with the Governor’s office to promote the special celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month to all Floridians,” said Secretary Hood. “Lilian Garcia-Roig is a wonderfully talented artist and we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to exhibit her work in the Capitol.”

The Cuban-born American artist Lilian Garcia-Roig is known for her landscape paintings and for works exploring themes of Cuban heritage. Her work is represented in the collections of museums across the southwest, Texas, and southeast, and she has exhibited in over 150 shows in the US, Mexico, and Cuba. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, and is currently Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Art at Florida State University.

Works on exhibit here include examples of her plein-air landscape oil paintings which aim to capture the character of seemingly ordinary, dense landscape in a way that reflects a passionate engagement with the scene and with the painting process. Also included are several works on paper exploring cultural themes regarding issues of transculturation.

More of her work may be seen at 621 Gallery in Tallahassee through mid-October 2004, and this Fall in a show titled “Transitory Patterns: Florida Artists” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC, which will travel to several museums in Florida through 2006.

Lilian Garcia-Roig’s work will be on display at the Plaza Level of the State Capitol Building through October 31. For more information and images please visit http://mailer.fsu.edu/~lgarcia
