Animal Homes of the Imagination

Call to Artists
Brevard Zoo, Melbourne Florida

This winter, Brevard Zoo will showcase its third annual Animal Homes of the Imagination exhibit from December 20, 2008, to January 5, 2009. The exhibit will feature seven, larger-than-life installations of ephemeral art depicting an artist’s vision of the type of home an animal might live in. A $1,000 stipend will be given to the seven artists chosen to create the installations. We invite you to consider participating, or request you forward this invitation on to anyone that might be interested in participating.

The Concept
Think of an animal home drawn from the imagination of a child. It might be larger than life, include distinctly human accommodations, or look like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Imagine a series of these wondrous installations displayed in the Zoo with a sign explaining the artist’s interpretation. Picture hundreds of people walking by these unique creations, seeing your work, and the Zoo offering workshops encouraging children to try their own hand at building animal homes. Please note: No animal will actually live in the home, this is just a representation.
By participating in the Animal Homes of the Imagination project, the Zoo offers you an opportunity to promote your work as an artist and contribute to the cultural life of the community.

Qualifications

Any individual or organizaiton can apply. The suggested size of the animal house should be 8’x8’x8’, but the Zoo will entertain larger or smaller creations. The Zoo is requesting the homes be made of mostly natural (wood, metal, etc.) and recycled materials, but there is no limit to the creativity. However, we are looking for variety—whimsical, historic, aeronautical, etc.At this time, the Zoo only seeks sketch ideas and concepts, not constructed models.

How to Apply

If you are interested in participating, please submit by 12 noon, Wednesday, September 10, 2008, a design concept complete with a timeline of the work and an explanation as to why Brevard Zoo should choose your animal home. Once the Zoo reviews each submission, seven winners will be chosen and notified by September 12. Selected projects must be completed and installed by December 19, 2008. Please send submissions to: Marketing Director, Brevard Zoo, 8225 North Wickham Road, Melbourne, FL 32940.

Deadline: September 12, 2008

Request for Proposal - OU Children's Physicians Facility

University Hospitals Authority & Trust, Oklahoma City Oklahoma

University Hospitals Authority & Trust is seeking an artist (or team of artists) to create permanent works of art for the following prominent locations at the new OU Children’s Physicians Facility:

• Exterior Sculpture Art/Entrance Plaza - $150,000
• Second Floor Stair Hanging/Kinetic Element - $100,000
• Second Floor Atrium Lobby Abstract Sculpture - $250,000

The artwork must convey a nature-inspired theme that will compliment the natural light and calming décor of the facility as well as provide a peaceful, soothing, calming, and family-friendly environment; making a visit to the doctor’s office or a trip to the hospital more pleasant for both patients and their families.

BUDGET
The artist's fees for these projects are broken out into the following: Exterior Sculpture Art/Entrance Plaza - $150,000, Second Floor Stair Hanging/Kinetic Element - $100,000, and the Second Floor Atrium Lobby Abstract Sculpture - $250,000. This amount must cover all costs of the artwork, such as travel, materials, the artist’s design, fabrication, insurance coverage, shipping and installation. However, if a design would be presented that would warrant additional funding; consideration would be given for raising additional funds. A supplemental design and budget would have to be submitted with the Request for Proposals.
